LANGUAGE

The two official languages are English and Maori. English is predominant and Maori is now taught at school. It is interesting to learn Maori because it is most often spoken in maraes, and many places have Maori names.

  • Goodbye: e noho ra/haere ra
  • Hello (to 1 person): tena koe
  • Hello (to 2 persons): tena korua
  • Hello (to 3 or more persons): tena koutou
  • How are you? (to 1 person): kei te pehea koe?
  • How are you? (to 2 persons): kei te pehea korua?
  • How are you? (to 3 or more persons): kei te pehea koutou ?
  • Very well, thank you: kei te pai
  • Thank you: ka pai
